RESGISTER ONLINE TO ATTEND AN UPCOMING CLASS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Each weaving class includes lecture, discussion, informative handouts, careful study of woven examples, drafting practice on paper, and extensive sample weaving. All students are welcome, from those with no weaving experience to advanced weavers who want to fill in gaps and enhance weaving and designing skills. Weaving class fees are all-inclusive (instruction, materials, handouts, and the use of looms and other equipment).
Very Beginning Four-Shaft Weaving Offered as either an intensive, 20-hour weekend workshop or over as six 3.5 hour sessions Become a weaver! In this class, designed for brand new weavers, you will weave your first project start to finish while learning how how to use a shaft loom. Instruction covers equipment and the weaver's vocabulary, warping, reading drafts and figuring yarn requirements. We’ll explore the many patterns possible with a simple twill threading, and get to know wool as a weaving fiber. Hands-on practice emphasizes how and why things work. You will also learn techniques for achieving smooth selvedges and an even beat. Lecture, handouts, and class assignments provide each student with a solid foundation. The basic weave structures are illustrated with sample weaving, and the completion of a beautiful and useful wool scarf provides a wonderful sense of accomplishment. This is only the beginning of your weaving adventure! Course fee: $145.00 includes all materials and use of a loom and other equipment. Beginning Weaving II Two-days, 16-hours The weaving adventure continues! Designed for students who have already taken a Very Beginning Handweaving class or who have woven on their own and know how to warp a loom. Explore the amazing variety of twill-based weaves possible on a four-harness loom. Students will build upon knowledge gained in a very beginning class, learning to read and thread a more complicated draft, handle more than one color in the warp, work with cotton yarns and additional weaving techniques and tips, and finishes. During the 16-hour course students will move from loom to loom, weaving in a round robin format giving them the opportunity to go home with five to six samples and a better understanding of various twill weaves. Cost: $125.00 includes all materials and use of a loom and other equipment.
Warping Review One session, 3 hours Has it been a long time since you wove? Do you find warping difficult or tedious? This three-hour workshop will review planning your project, calculating warp and weft needs, winding a warp, dressing a loom (alone!), reading pattern drafts, and repairs and tricks. Cost: $25.00 includes numerous hand-outs Exploring Overshot Two-days, 16-hours Overshot weave is a favorite of handweavers because complex designs are created on only four shafts! Learn basic block theory, explore different treadling variations for traditional and not-so-traditional results, and learn how to create a name draft in overshot. This class is for weavers who have already taken a beginning weaving class or who know how to warp a loom. Students will be provided materials and warping instructions in order to bring their pre-warped looms to class. Looms may also be rented and pre-warped at the Bluster Bay Weaving Room during the week prior to the course. Class cost: $125.00 includes all materials. Loom rental and warping assistance: $25.00 Painted Warp Workshop Two 3.5 hour sessions In this two-evening workshop, we’ll learn both the basics of working with fiber reactive dyes and how to design a successful weaving project that incorporates a painted warp. We’ll have lots of fun designing beautiful silk- wool blend scarf warps, mixing colors and then painting the warp that can be used to weave 2 scarves on your loom at home after the workshop. Class cost: $125.00 includes dyes as well as 50% silk/50% wool warp yarn, enough for two scarves Bring: Apron or old clothes, rubber gloves, and a small tub or bucket in which to carry wet yarn home More Hands-On Classes Coming Soon:
